Step 1: Complete Your Required Training

One of the first licensing requirements is completing your CA-EMSA approved 8-hour Preventive Health & Safety training.

Many applicants choose to complete this early so they already have their certificate when it's time to submit their licensing paperwork.

Step 2: Complete Pediatric CPR & First Aid

California childcare providers must also complete a CA-EMSA approved 8-hour Pediatric CPR and First Aid training. This is a separate requirement from the Preventive Health & Safety course, so it's a good idea to schedule both as early as possible. Although Preventive Health & Safety is permitted by California Community Care Licensing to be taken online, CPR and First Aid requires a hands-on component and must have a portion of the course taken in-person.

Step 3: Complete Your Orientation

Prospective childcare providers must complete the required Community Care Licensing orientation before submitting their application.

Many applicants complete this while gathering the rest of their required documents.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Once you've completed the required training and gathered the necessary paperwork, you can submit your application to California Community Care Licensing.

Step 5: Fingerprinting & Background Checks

Background checks and Live Scan fingerprinting are required for most applicants and, depending on your childcare setting, may also be required for other adults associated with the facility. Completing these requirements early can help prevent unnecessary delays later in the process.

Step 6: Prepare for Licensing

While your application is being processed, you can prepare your childcare home or facility by completing health and safety improvements, organizing required records, and making sure your space is ready for licensing requirements.
